CA-219 Firing Operations Course Registration Information

Register early!  This class has limited space available. 

You must first register for the 2024 San Luis Obispo Training Exchange (TREX)  San Luis Obispo County, CA: October 21st - 28th, 202.

TREX - CA-219 Firing Operations Course Information

This CA-219 Wildland Firing Operations course is part of the San Luis Obispo TREX event scheduled for October 21-28, 2024.  The CA-219 class is planned for October 21-26, including 2 days in the classroom and 3 days of hands-on live fire exercises in the field.  The classroom portion is scheduled for Monday, October 21st and Tuesday, October 22nd, the Cal Fire/San Luis Obispo County Fire Training Center, 880 Manzanita Drive Los Osos, CA 93402.  The field portion is planned to occur Oct 23-25 at various locations throughout San Luis Obispo County, depending on burning conditions, air quality concerns and local resource availability.  If we are not able to meet the live firing requirements to complete the CA-219 class, students that meet the NWCG S-219 prerequisites will be issued a NWCG S-219 course completion certificate for the classroom portion.


CA-219 Course Prerequisites

  1. NWCG 310-1: Wildland Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1);
  2. S-290: Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (classroom only);
  3. Online component for NWCG S-219: Firing Operations;
  4. Two (2) pre-course instructor-developed quizzes.
  5. Students must possess the arduous level of physical ability per    NWCG guidelines and be in excellent health. Students are required to perform hotline wildland firefighting using hand tools, while carrying 40 pounds of back pumps or drip torches in hot weather


After the classroom portion of CA-219 is successfully completed each student will need to complete the State Fire Training Firing Operations Student Task Book to be issued a CA-219 course completion certificate.  The State Fire Training Firing Operations Student Task Book is a performance-based document. It lists the Experience and Course Performance Requirements for course completion.

Students will also be required to participate in the live fire training portion in full wildland PPE including Nomex pants, shirt, shroud, helmet, boots, gloves, and eye protection.  All PPE will need to meet OSHA and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1977, Standard on Protective Clothing and Equipment for Wildland Fire Fighting, 2011 Edition

Task Book Requirements

Experience

The candidate meets one of the following requirements for experience.

☐ A minimum of one years’ full-time paid experience in a California fire agency or cooperator as a fire fighter performing suppression or prescribed fire duties

or

☐ A minimum of two years part-time paid or volunteer experience in a California fire agency or cooperator as a fire fighter performing suppression or prescribed fire duties

or

☐ A combination of full-time paid or part-time/volunteer experience equal to one years’ full-time paid experience in a California fire agency or cooperator as a fire fighter performing suppression or prescribed fire duties

• Part-time/volunteer to full-time paid ratio is 2:1 (for example, two months part-time/volunteer = one month full-time paid) [Insert experience requirement]

 

A Registered CA-219 instructor will only issue the CA-219: Firing Operations Task Book after verifying the candidate has:

• Successfully completed 310-1: Wildland Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1)

• Successfully completed S-290: Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (classroom)

• Successfully completed the summative test for CA-219: Wildland Firefighting – Firing Operations (2019)
